She Sells Sea Shells: Ocean & By the Sea

If you're a Scentsy fan, you're probably already familiar with Ocean, which is part of their Favourites collection.

Ocean is described by Scentsy as consisting of "Cool and refreshing aquatic notes deepened with water lilies and ocean breezes."  Scentsy's description of Ocean is right on. This is a classic aquatic scent which is nicely blended with Sharp ozone and soft floral notes.

With the new Spring/Summer 2014 release, Scentsy has added, By the Sea, a second ocean inspired fragrance, to their line up. I'm really happy that Scentsy decided to introduce By the Sea this spring... It effectively doubles their aquatic fragrance optoins, since before this, Ocean was all there was.

By the Sea is described as "The scent of ocean air wafting through dewy seaside grass."

Based on the description alone, I would have guessed this is what By the Sea would smell like...

In reality, I think it smells more like this...

If you went to highschool in the late 90's you know exactly what Cool Water smells like... And if you're a woman chances are you owned a bottle.  By the Sea isn't as fruity as the perfume but its scent is definietly comparable.

When taking a whiff of By the Sea, I don't pick up any of the grass or breezy notes that Scentsy advertises. While very similar to Ocean, By the Sea isn't as clean smelling -- It replaces Ocean's fresh ozone notes with stronger floral ones and as a result has a far more perfumey and feminine smell.

If you're a fan of Ocean, I strongly recommend trying By the Sea. It's more of a sister scent than a complete reinvention so you'll likely enjoy it as well.  If both are new to you, then go with Ocean since it's more of a pure aquataic fragrance and would help to add variety to any Scentsy fragrance collection.
